OFFICIAL RULES FOR THE
GEORGE SAUNDERS PHOTO CHALLENGE
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. A PURCHASE WILL NOT ENHANCE YOUR CHANCE
OF WINNING.
Open only to legal US residents, ages 18 and up.
How to Enter:
1. Entrants must submit their own original photo representing,
literally and/or metaphorically, the subjects and themes of George
Saunders’ short stories.
2.
Go to www.InPersuasionNation.com to upload your photo or you may
email your entry to ImBringingIt@InPersuasionNation.com. Photos
must be in .JPG format and files larger than 250K will not be
accepted. Along with your entry, please include your full name,
age, mailing address, and email address. Entries must be received
by October 1, 2006, 11:59 PM. Limit one entry per person.

Entries are void if they are in whole or in part illegible, incomplete
or damaged. Penguin Group (USA) Inc. (“Sponsor”),
its parent, subsidiaries, affiliates and the agencies of any of
them are not responsible for technical, hardware, software or
telephone malfunctions of any kind, lost or unavailable network
connections, or failed, incorrect, incomplete, inaccurate, garbled
or delayed electronic communications caused by the sender, or
by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized
in this contest which may limit the ability to play or participate,
or by any human error which may occur in the processing of the
entries in this contest. If for any reason the contest is not
capable of being conducted as described in these rules, Sponsor
shall have the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the
contest. In the event of a dispute over the identity of an online
entrant, entry will be deemed submitted by the authorized holder
of the e-mail account.
Prize(s):
1. Three (3) winners will each receive an autographed
George Saunders library consisting of a hardcover copy of In Persuasion
Nation and paperback copies of The Brief and Frightening Reign
of Phil, Pastoralia and CivilWarLand in Bad Decline – Approximate
Retail Value (“ARV”) - $65 per set.
2. Sponsor reserves the right not to award the prize if there
is an insufficient number of entries or if the judges determine
in their absolute discretion that no or too few entries meet the
quality standards established to award the prizes.
Judging:
1. On or about November 1, 2007, all eligible entries received
will be judged by a qualified panel of judges selected by Sponsor
and George Saunders (“Author”).
2. Entries will be judged on their aesthetic merit and their ability
to capture and express Author’s themes and ideas in a photograph.
Sponsor’s and Author’s decisions with respect to the
selection of the winners, and in regard to all matters relating
to this contest (including but not limited to the eligibility
of contestants), shall be final.
3. The winners will be notified by email and/or mail.
Eligibility:
This contest is open to legal US residents ages 18 and up. Employees,
and their immediate family members living in the same household,
of Sponsor, its parent, and subsidiaries are not eligible to enter.
Void where prohibited by law.
General:
1. No substitutions, transfers or assignments of prizes allowed.
In the event of unavailability, Sponsor may substitute a prize
of equal or greater value.
2. All expenses, including taxes, (if any) on receipt and use
of the prize are the sole responsibility of the winner.
3. Winners may be required to execute an Affidavit of Eligibility
and Release and, if so, the Affidavit must be returned within
fourteen days of notification or another winner will be selected.
4. All entries become the sole property of Sponsor and will not
be returned. By entering, contestants represent and warrant that
their entries are their own original work and agree that they
shall not upload or transmit any content which a) libels, defames,
is obscene, pornographic, abusive or threatening; b) infringes
any intellectual property right or any entity or person, including
but not limited to violating anyone’s copyrights or trademarks;
c) violates any law; d) advocates illegal activity; e) advertises
or otherwise solicits funds or is a solicitation for goods or
services; f) contains a virus or other harmful component; or g)
violates any other rights of third parties (“Non-Approved
Material”)
5. All rights, including copyrights, in all photographs submitted
by contestants for this contest become sole property of Sponsor,
and Sponsor and its designees have the right to exploit, edit,
modify, distribute, publish and display the entries and all elements
of such entries, including, without limitation, the names and
likenesses of any persons or locations embodied therein, in any
and all media (including posting the photographs on Sponsor’s
websites), now or hereafter known throughout the world in perpetuity.
Sponsor and its designees will not be required to obtain any further
permission from contestants.
6. Sponsor and its designees have the right to refrain from posting
any entry on Sponsor’s websites and may remove from its
websites any posted entry at any time for any reason.
7. By accepting a prize the winners grant to Sponsor the right
to use his/her name, likeness, hometown and biographical information
in advertising and promotional materials in connection with this
promotion, including posting on Sponsor’s websites without
further compensation or permission, except where prohibited by
law.
8. By competing in this contest and/or accepting the prize, participants
release Author, Sponsor, its parent and subsidiaries, and the
agents of any of them, from any and all liability for any loss,
harm, injuries, damages, cost or expense, arising out of participation
in this contest or the acceptance, use or misuse of the prize
or the publication or transmittal of Non-Approved Material or
their failure to comply with these Official Rules.
9. Any dispute arising from this contest will be determined according
to the laws of the State of New York, without reference to its
conflict of law principles, and the entrants consent to the personal
jurisdiction of the State and Federal courts located in New York
County and agree that such courts have exclusive jurisdiction
over all such disputes.

For the names of the winners, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope
